We should all be, and feel, safe at work. After #MeToo it’s impossible to ignore the fact that people working in the arts, including opera, haven’t always worked in the safe environment they deserve. That must change, and we’d like to be a part of that change. Which is why we’ve partnered with Houselights and Intimacy Directors International UK to offer a training day for onstage performers in opera.
When and where
11am-6pm, Sunday 24 February 2019
Paines Plough HQ, London
Intimacy workshop for opera singers
Creating intimate moments are part of the heart and soul of opera: from embraces, kisses, enticement to sexual images and close proximity. But what is "consensual creativity" and how do we get there safely? We will discuss and practically explore how to use intimacy tools to create safe, consented visual moments.
Shining a light on sexual harrassment in opera
Let’s talk about the multitude of ways harassment manifests in our industry. Let’s plan for change. With the support of theatres, unions and other organisations, Houselights workshops let performers know about the different harassment policies in theatres and companies that they will likely work with in their careers.
Plus industry panel and discussions
These workshops are open to all singers in training, and to onstage performers at any stage of their career. All genders are welcome. There is no requirement to discuss personal experiences in either of these workshops. The Staging Intimacy workshop will involve practical exercises, but consent is paramount, and you can choose to sit out and observe at any time. If you’d like to talk to us, or ask us anything before attending, or if you’d like to discuss your access needs, please do get in touch on [email protected]

Houselights was set up by Rachel Vogler and Kimberley Turford, two graduates of the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Our mission is to ensure that everyone in our industry are aware of what support is available to them should they experience an incident of sexual harassment. We work on prevention, through our workshops on safe working practice and our Teaching Faculty sessions for Drama Schools and we work on supporting students at a grassroots level, through networks and Open Forum evenings. We assist training institutions and other organisations to raise the profile of their policies, making them accessible to all. Through Houselights, we can prioritise support for harassment and the redefining of our working cultures. Through Houselights, we can make sure that our graduates, our freelancers, our peers can thrive in this industry safely. Since being formed in September we have delivered student sessions, awareness sessions for staff, women’s network meetings, Open Forums and much more. We are delighted to be supported by The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama’s Start-Up and Enterprise Fund.
