The Venue (Uffculme), Cullompton

Friday, 26 Apr

£5.34 - £8.54

The 24-strong National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO) take to the stage under the direction of MD Mark Armstrong to bring you the best of British big band jazz. NYJO is a glittering showcase for the UK’s finest young professional jazz musicians, combining a hard-swinging rhythm section and a raft of hugely talented soloists. Performing around 35 concerts a year both nationally and internationally, NYJO has helped launch the careers of many of the country’s most renowned jazz musicians including Guy Barker, Amy Winehouse, Mark Nightingale and Laura Jurd. Join them at Uffculme School as they present the premiere of their brand new concert programme, State Of The Nation. The concert will celebrate the big names flying the flag for British jazz today, but also explore how we got here: from the Dankworths, Humphry Lyttleton and Ronnie Scott, to Afro-Carribbean influences arriving with the Windrush generation and influences from musical traditions far from jazz and from all around the world. This melting pot of cultural influences has made British jazz what it is today, and we think that’s worth celebrating!

Joining them on stage, the DYJO Ambassadors – an elite group of young jazz musicians drawn from the ranks of Devon Devon Youth Jazz Orchestra (DYJO). Supported by funding from Devon Music Education Hub, DYJO teaches young people from across the whole of Devon including Exeter, North Devon, South Devon, Torbay and Dartmoor to play and perform a wide variety of jazz. DYJO has won many national awards over the years for its performances and educational programme, and continues to play to enthusiastic audiences in Devon and beyond.

Devon has long been recognised for excellence in jazz education and this event marks the beginning of an exciting five year strategic partnership between NYJO and Devon Music Education Hub.
